"ALVIN DEDEAUX: Another important item to have in your vest or your box or your fanny pack is split shot. This will help you get your flies to sink. They come in all different sizes, shapes, even different materials, lead being the most common. But there's a lot of places now where you actually can't use lead, so there's a split shot made of tin, there's a split shot made of tungsten, there's split shot painted different colors to match the bottom, there's split shot with little rubber inserts so they don't pinch your line. For something as simple as a chunk of lead, there's a lot of options out there. I just buy a bunch of different ones, dump them in the same little cup and just dig through there when I need one."
