"ALVIN DEDEAUX: So the first step in tying this Pheasant Tail Nymph is to mash down the barb and put the hook in the vice. And I'm going to use my pliers here to sort of put the barb right there and give it a good squeeze. The reason you want to do this before you tie the fly is if you decided that you wanted to mash the barb down after you've tied your fly, sometimes, you'll have a point break off the hook. And after you've gone all the trouble of tying the fly and then you mash down the barb and the point breaks off the hook, then you gotta use this fly. So always go ahead and mash them down first. And the reason we're using the barb as hook is, you know, one it's for making it easier to release the fish without the barb and also if we hook ourselves to one of our fishing partners it's much easier to pull this hook out without the barb on it. So then I'm going to stick it in the vice, adjust it a little bit, make sure that's--the jaws are about right and then I'll use my back adjuster, crank it down nice and tight. I want to make sure that that hook is pretty much straight. So if I decide to use my rotary feature, the hook shank stays in the same plane when I rotate it. Now, we're ready to start putting some materials on here."
