ALVIN DEDEUX: If you're fishing in a weedy river or out in the ocean somewhere where you're concerned about the point of your fly getting snagged on stuff, you can attach a weed guard. And usually, it's best to attach this before you tie the rest of the fly. So what I've done is I've put my fly on my vise and I've attached my thread to the hook. I'm just going to take this piece of heavy monofilament. That's going to be my weed guard. I'm going to attach that up here near the front of the hook, kinda near the eye of the hook, cinch it down and then just make nice closed-tight wraps all the way down to the bend of the hook and even a little beyond. What you kinda want to do is sort of get that weed guard to curve around the hook so you kinda keep wrapping until you're sort of getting into the bend of the hook. And the most of the other things, we'd stop before we got there. But we're actually going to wrap this down and then we'll bring our thread back up toward the front. Now if we're actually tying a fly on this hook, then we'll just kind of pull this back out of the way and continue tying the rest of our materials to our hook. But just for demonstration purposes, I'm going to go ahead and finish this off without any other materials.
