How to Use a Bobbin Cradle in Fly Tying

"ALVIN DEDEUX: Another part of a lot of modern vises is this little deal here we call the bobbin cradle, that allows you to bring your thread forward or any of your tying materials. And if you want to use the rotary feature of the vise, if you didn't use the bobbin cradle, what happens is as you spin this, your thread is going to get wrapped up around the hook shank. But if I bring my bobbin cradle forward and then just drop my thread there, I want to try to make sure that that cradle is pretty much even with the hook shank. Then I can wrap my material and not have to worry about what that thread is doing. So that bobbin cradle just sort of holds it right in place till I'm ready. Okay, I got my material wrapped forward, grab my thread, swing it around. See, it hadn't wound up on the hook shank at all, and I can go ahead and tie my material off. So the bobbin cradle will save you a lot of time and effort."
