ALVIN DEDEUX: Lot of flies these days come with dumbbell eyes. This is just a way to weight the fly. It also allows the fly to flip over so that the hook point rides up. So if you're fishing in the bottom, you fly doesn't get snagged as easily. And the best way to do it is to put the eye on the hook and then wrap the thread around the dumbbell in one direction and give that maybe four or five good tight wraps. Then we want to straighten the eye out so it's straight on the hook shank. We'll pull it back so that it's straight and then wrap it in the other direction, maybe five or six times. So it sort of makes a cross. Now, it's straight. Now, what we'll do is we'll do a couple of crisscross wraps to really lock it down. And by doing the wraps one way and then doing them the other way, it's a much more solid than if we just put it on and just did crisscross wraps from the start. So remember, we're going to put it on one way, make a few wraps, then push it over and then make a few wraps in the other direction, then do our crisscross wraps to lock it down.
