Tips on Making the First Bucktail for Fly Fishing

"ALVIN DEDEAUX: Next step is to attach our first color of bucktail. This is what's going to be on the bottom. So, usually, most fish are lighter colored on the bottom and darker colored on the top so we're going to put some white bucktail on the bottom. So, I'm just going to grab a piece. Usually the further you're out on the tail of the bucktail, the better the hair will be, so I've used a little bit of this already but I'm just going to go ahead and grab some as far out on the tail as I can. Clip off a piece. The first thing you do is grab the end of the buck tail and pull out all that underfur. That stuff is short and a lot of times it's kind of funky, so we'll just take that out. So, we really just want these nice long hairs. Okay. Now, I've got it. And you can make it pretty sparse. You can make it pretty furry. This is kind of a mid, not too sparse, not too thick. What I would do is I want to figure out how long I want it to be, so I'm going to kinda put it up here and hold it. I'm thinking, "Yeah, that's about the right length. That's about what I want.""
