"ALVIN DEDEAUX: Okay, so to shoot line, what we're going to do is we're going to need to have a little bit of extra line out between our reel and our finger where we have our line anchored. So if you have some extra line out, you can either pull the line in here. But usually what you want to do is pull a little bit more line off the reel. Okay? And the way you're going to shoot line is basically when you make that abrupt stop either on your back cast or your forward cast. If you release line right after you make that abrupt stop, it will pull that extra line out, just the momentum of the fly line when it comes off the rod tip will pull the extra line out. So basically that's what it looks like. You can shoot it on the back cast or the forward cast. Usually when you first start out, it's a lot easier to do it on your forward cast. You might make a couple of false casts, kinda wind up, stop and then let go. And that's how you shoot your line."
