"ALVIN DEDEAUX: Okay, one thing you want to watch out for when you grab the rod is that you don't squeeze the rod. When you use your thumb-on-top grip, you want to have a little space between the handle and the pad of your hand here. You don't want to squeeze it like that. Another thing you don't want to do is this type of grip. What you want is to have a nice, relaxed grip. Most of the time, you're really kinda squeezing the rod between these three fingers and your other two fingers are just kinda hanging in there floating, so you don't want to choke up on the rod. If you see your fingernails are digging into the palm of your hand or your knuckles are turning white, you're definitely gripping the rod too tight. Nice and relaxed, just hold it, so that the rod doesn't fly out of your hand when you're casting. There's no need to try to crush the handle with your hand."
