"ALVIN DEDEAUX: There are several different ways to grip the fly rod. Probably the most common is with the thumb on top of your grip. What you want to do is have the pad of your thumb flat up near the end of the grip and you'll just have your fingers comfortably kind of curled around the rest of the handle. Usually, the best way to do that is just grab it with three fingers, get that thumb there and curl your fingers around, like so. And this is a nice strong grip. You got plenty of power here to push with that thumb when you're doing your cast."
