"ALVIN DEDEAUX: First thing we need to do before we start casting is to thread the rod, obviously. There's a couple of ways you can do it. Some people say there's the right way and then there's a wrong way. The wrong way or the hard way would be to take the end of the leader and try to thread it through each one of the guides. It's much easier to just pull enough line off your reel to thread the whole rod and then grab the end of the fly line, where the fly line and the leader come together, and thread it that way. It's a lot easier to see. And also if for some reason you let go of the line part way up, using that loop will catch itself and not pull it all the way back through so you don't have to start all over again. Then you can just thread it all the way until you get to the tip, and then I'll just pull the leader and my practice fly right through the tip, and we're ready to start."
