Attaching Black Thread to a Fishing Hook

"Next thing we need to do is attach our thread to the hook, so, we're just going to lay it across in front and then make a couple of wraps back over that end and cut it off right here nice and close. And we're using a pretty heavy thread here. This woolly bugger is a pretty good sized fly and some of the materials are pretty bulky, so we want to make sure this thread is heavy enough to be able to put plenty of tension of that hook to be able to attach those materials securely to that hook. We are going to start tying from the back of the fly, so I'm going to go ahead and just take my thread back to the back of the fly hook. You make nice even wraps or if you're in a hurry, you can kind of just spiral it back. I kind of like to make a nice, smooth under base of the rest of the fly. Ok, and I usually come back right about to the point of the hook, and when you get back here you want to be careful, because that hook point is really sharp. If you hit that hook point with your thread it could cut your thread. So, a lot of times, I'll get it back to here, then I'll just kind of turn my vice a little bit, so that that thread can hang down freely without making contact with the point of that hook. Now, I'm ready to start attaching my materials to that hook."
