"Hello, I'm Howard and welcome to this introduction to Hatha Yoga. Once we've learned how to sit comfortably the next task is to learn how to breathe correctly. This is not something that we're normally very much aware of but it's the first thing that we do when we're born is taking that first breath on our own. So we're just going to practice breathing deeply in this segment be sure as you inhale that you expand the stomach and as you exhale that you pull it in. So let's close the eyes, close the mouth and just be aware of the breath as it enters the nostrils. Cools the back of the throat you can almost taste it and then again most importantly expanding the belly. Feeling the ribs expand and the lungs inflate and the heart just float up effortlessly and then when you exhale pull the stomach muscles in gently but firmly back into the spine. This will tone the stomach muscles, it will improve your digestion and elimination and most importantly, it'll thoroughly oxygenate all the blood in the lower two-thirds of the lungs. The diaphragm moves up and down as you inhale and exhale. Once you have control of the navel, you've established contact, try and slow that movement down so it takes a little bit longer each time you breathe in and each time you breathe out. One technique here is to count the breaths see how long it takes you to breathe in. Make sure you exhale the same amount of time and then on the next inhale increase it by a couple of seconds so you breathe in a little bit longer and counting you exhale a little longer. There are many other forms of Pranayama or breathing exercises in Hatha Yoga. Sometime we alternate nostrils sometimes we increase the pace sometimes we hold the breath but mastery of long deep breathing is perhaps the most important lesson that we can learn from Hatha Yoga."
