"The next thing that we're going to cover is inhaling and exhaling. When you breathe in Pilates, you want to try to breathe in through the lateral sides of your rib cage and use all of your lung capacity. So, take a nice deep inhale and as you do, try not to stick out your chest and to only use your upper lungs. Put your hands on your ribs and inhale. You should feel it expanding through the sides of your rib cage. And not hiking your shoulders up in an effort to use all of your lung capacity nor sticking your chest forward and just using your upper lungs. Exhale, and squeeze out all the air, as much as you can. Again, inhale and feel it pushing out to the sides of your rib cage, and exhale. If you were to do it on the mat, you would feel the breath push the ribs into the back of the mat. This is very important. Inhale and exhale."
