"The J stroke is a settled turning stroke that the guide can do as they work their way down stream. It's a slow moving stroke, not super effective in a raft. You need to make sure you know where the power face is. That's the part of the paddle blade that touches the water and as you're doing your forward stroke, you do your forward stroke and then turn the paddle power face out into a turning stroke. One of the ways that you can think a little bit about that is to take your thumb on the t-grip here at the top of the paddle and the thumb turns down as you get power into that turning section of stroke here. So you're paddling nice strong forward stroke and then your turn into a j-stroke right there and that helps keep the boat turning ever so slightly. We'll watch these guys do a nice j-stroke here, the guide in the back of the raft. So that j-stroke is used to help you maneuver the raft down stream, every time you take a forward stroke the raft is starting to turn and so that j-stroke stops that turn at the end of your forward stroke and helps the raft stay in a straight line and there's where it's most effective."
