Series Summary

Diving is an interesting and sometimes death defying sport. Using acrobatics and technique, divers leap from varying heights with the intention of gracefully hitting the water. This test is typically judged by a lack of water displacement at entry, in which the diver would rise out of the water and be rewarded with thunderous applause. It's true that divers share the pool but they are reluctant to call themselves swimmers. Flying into the water with poise and nerves of steel is what tempts these thrill seekers and naysayers of gravity. Competing in this sport takes guts and an overwhelming tendency to defy fear.

Video Transcript

"Hi, I'm Bobby Larew. Welcome to diving. Right now what we're going to talk about is getting ready to dive. We're not actually going to get in the water yet, but we're going to talk about some of the things you'll need to warm up. First you want to make sure that you have the proper clothing. Any t-shirt will do, not very loose, not very baggy. Any pair of athletic shorts will do. Try to get shorts without pockets because as you're warming up you might get your fingers or your hands caught in them as you're doing it. Also on your feet you want a good pair of shoes, tied very well. You want to make sure that they're sturdy because you will be doing a few things like maybe running or jumping rope, so make sure that you do have proper attire when you're warming up. A few of the things that you'll need for warm up for instance could be: medicine ball, which we're going to use a little bit later. They've got different weights starting at 2 lbs. and go all the way up to 20 lbs. I'm going to recommend that you start small. Also, dumbbells, again, wider variety of weights, 3 to 15 to 20 lbs. Start small. Also, we have a resistance band and what I'm standing on right now is the mat which we'll be using for most of the time."
