Series Summary

Soccer, or football (futbol), is a team sport played between two teams of eleven players, and is the most popular sport in the world. It is a variant of football played on a rectangular field of grass or artificial turf with a goal at each of the short ends. The object of the game is to score by moving the ball into the opposing goal. In general, the goalkeepers are the only players allowed to use their hands or arms to propel the ball, and the rest of the team usually uses their feet to kick the ball into position, while occasionally using their torso or head to intercept a ball in midair. The team that scores the most goals by the end of the match is the winner.

Video Transcript

"Hi, My name is Christopher Howell with Expert Village and today I'm going to talk to you about how to watch soccer and it's basics. The goal keeper has a goal line in which they, inside that goalie box, not the net itself, they actually have a white line across the floor which is called the goal box. Anywhere within that goal box they can pick the ball up with their bare hands. Only the goalie can do that. Once he leaves that goal box he can no longer pick the ball up with his hands. He's got to use his feet just like anyone else. Those right there are the basics. The goalie can pick up the ball right there within the goal distance. If the ball goes out of bounds it's the other team's ball. You will have the side official will say who's ball it is or you will have the actual official on the field who says it's this persons ball, which ever is the easiest or quickest way to see what is going on. No hand balls. Anything from the shoulders down is a hand ball. You got to play the ball not the other person. That's your basics."
