"If your horse is extremely sensitive back there, there is another method on getting on that might be more well suited for him. Still using the mounting block as this is one of the least stressful ways of getting on as far as your horses back is concerned. We are going to start the same way reins in the left hand. Right hand in the palm of the saddle, putting the left foot into the stirrup and slowly starting to come up and swinging over. Now here is how I differ instead of putting the weight on the horses back you would notice that I am holding the horses back. Now I'm going to pick up the right stirrup carefully being sure that I get it, that I'm not kicking the horse that I'm just grabbing the stirrup and now I can slowly lower down or you can go to a two point position if you need to and stay off the horses back. Definitely picking the reins up and then slowly lowering down. It is always good to have a few backups especially if you are riding numerous horses. "
