How to Stop a Horse from a Canter

"I'm Kelli on behalf of Expert Village, I'm going to show you some tips and techniques that I use when cantering and loping my horse. So the next thing we would go over is some tips and techniques that you could use to stop and back your horse from the canter. So let me move her up here into a canter. Depending on what level of skill your horse is at, your horse and she is very balanced and she is very cadent so she is not moving to fast or to slow of speed. Some of your horses may cruise around a little bit faster so they may be a little bit harder to stop. But that is one thing that you want to ensure when you are cantering your horse. S o you have your horse collected which would give better control and you would have there haunches engaged properly and have there shoulder lifted. So that way when you sit and say whoa your horse would very easily shut down. Without having you to pull a whole lot or go half way the arena before your horse actually stops. So again what you want to do pick up on your reins, get a little bit of collection, soften your horse face around its back, sit deep, pull back slightly on your reins and say whoa. Now if your horse does run through the bit you have pull on it a little bit harder just keep pulling until you get your horse to stop. Once you finally get it to stop just pull it and they would back up. Keep pulling until you get your horse to stop and once you finally get it to stop just pull it and make it back up. That that is a technique that you could use to effectively teach your horse how to stop. Horses like to stop a whole lot more then what they like to go backwards. So the more you make your horse back up when it does not listen to you when it is stops that more it is going to be willing to stop verses to back up. So again you want to sit, pull back, say whoa. So that is how you want to stop your horse."
