"Hi! I'm Kelli and this is Colby on behalf of Expert Village. I am going to show you my opinions and techniques on how to lunge your horse. Teaching your horse to stop on a lunge line is a really important skill that they should learn. So when you want them to stop and make her go here a little bit, going to have her kind of canter around here. When I want her to stop, I am going to say whoa and I am going to pull. Whoa, whoa. I am just going to keep saying whoa and pulling until she stops. Some of them you might have a little bit harder time getting them to stop; whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. You just want to keep doing it over and over again until they get that word through their head. So take them back into a trot and have them trot a few steps. Whoa, whoa, whoa. Now if it takes them too long to listen, you might want to pull a little harder on your lunge line or you might want to switch to a lunge line with a chain something that will give you a little it more control. But eventually you want to get them to the point where you just say whoa and they will stop really easily for you. Whoa, whoa, whoa. Another thing you want to make sure you do when you are asking them to stop is to hold your whip down, hold the whip away from them because if you still point the whip at them, they are going to want to go. See. So you want to put your whip down. You can even drop your whip if you are done and you want them to stop, whoa. That is usually a cue that you are done and you want them to stop. So that is how you want to get your horse to halt on a lunge line. "
