"Hi! I'm Kelli on behalf of Expert Village. I am going to show you my techniques to saddling a horse with an English saddle. There are a lot of different kinds of saddle pads on the market so you want to make sure that you choose one that is going to properly suit your horse and your horse's back. There are gel pads out there and pads that have air in them that provide a lot more cushion. So if your horse is a little bit older and a little bit thinner through the backbone and need a little bit more cushion there, has a longer back where it has a little bit of a sway in it, that might be something you might want to consider to give your horse a little bit more cushion, a little bit more comfort when you are riding. You can also get pads with risers built into them so that might be something you might want to consider as well if your horse has a little bit more of a sway in its back or is very high withered and the back is actually lower than the withers. Or if your horse needs a little bit more comfort or height in its back. So there are a couple of different options that you can use when you are choosing the proper salad pad for your horse. "

on 8/2/2008 If an English saddle fits properly it should not need any kind of thick pad. The only use for a saddle cloth is to keep the saddle clean.
