"Hi! I'm Kelli on behalf of Expert Village. I am going to show you my opinions and techniques on how to properly lead your horse. Now that I place my halter and lead horse on my horse, there is a proper way that you should lead your horse. You should always lead your horse on the left side. The horses are more used to being approached on the left, so they are a little more comfortable. When you hold your lead rope, you want to hold it in between your fingers. You never want to wrap it around your hands like this and you also want loop it like this. You never want to leave it dragging or leave it too long. Just in case you would trip over it, the horse would step on it and get scared. So we are going to do that and hold the lead rope in our right hand right under the horse's chin right at this clip. When we walk, we are going to look straight ahead because if you look at the horse, they have a tendency to not want to follow you. They have a tendency to stop. We always want to keep a little bit of length about an arm's length between the horse and you that way you won't get stepped on. We always want to be really alert to what we are doing, pay attention, always have look out for things that may cause your horse to spook because that is a good way to get trampled when you don't pay attention. Whoa, just pull back slightly if you want them to stop. You can turn and face them too. That is a good way to have them stop and that is the proper way to lead your horse. "
