"Hi my name is Sarah and on behalf of expertvillage.com, I am here at Petland in Pembroke Pines, Florida to educate you a little bit today about caring for your ferret. Ferrets can be trained to use the litter box. You should get a large cat size litter box for them, place it in a corner of the cage that they naturally go in and wire it down. You may need to drill holes in the side of the litter box to wire it to the side of the cage because ferrets will want to move it around just like they do with everything else in their cage. Once you have the litter box in there, you should be using either a pelleted pine litter like this one or you can use a pelleted with recycled newspaper litter. Both of those litters are very dust free and much better for your ferret’s respiratory track because when you put new litter in the ferret’s will tend to want to dig and what we call snorkel in the litter box and play in it a lot. If you use a cat litter that has a lot of dust, it can be very irritating to ferret’s sinuses. To litter box train them you want to place newspaper in the cage. Anything they do outside of the littler box you want to take that and put that back in the litter box. If they have a bowel movement outside of the litter box, you want to pick it up with a paper towel or napkin, put that back in the litter box and if they urinate outside of the litter box, you want to tear off that part of the newspaper that they urinated on, crumple it up and put it in the litter box. After a few days, they should be consistently going in the litter box. It is also important to understand that when a ferret wakes up it will usually a minute or so go to the bathroom. So it is important that when they wake up that you take them and put them in the litter box and when they do go in the litter box, give them a treat. That way they will understand that when they go in the litter box they are doing the right thing.
