Digging Toys for Your Pet Ferret

"Hi there! My name is Fran Friedman and I am with Morning Store Animal Sanctuary and I am here to talk to you about ferrets and digging toys on behalf of expertvillage.com. Ferrets love to dig. You’ll find that when you put a fresh litter pan back in the cage, sometimes they will go and try to dig in it. Everyone who has carpet and ferrets know that they like to dig up the carpet. To know and deter this behavior you can give them options. One suggestion is to fill a box with pieces of jigsaw puzzles, so you can go to garage sales and see all kinds of jigsaw puzzles. You know they are missing pieces but usually for 50 cents you can buy them. You dump them all broken up into a big box, you put it in the middle and they dig and dig through it. It can’t hurt them. They usually take the pieces and sometimes hide them, steal them away and that is kind of fun for them. If you ever do see them eating them, definitely take them away but in my experience so far it is that they usually don’t eat the pieces. They are not usually in to chewing paper but they do like digging. Another thing to deter their digging habit in the house is to give them time outside in a safe area. You could set up an exercise pen either right on the dirt or you could put them on a harness with a leash and definitely stay with them. Let them dig. You might even set up like a little Zen farm with some sand as long as it is clean sand or a children’s sand box, they can dig in that. Make sure everything that you give them to play with is safe and there are no pesticides on the lawn or in the dirt or near the sand and they should have a great time and that definitely will help with digging problems around the house.
