When to Adopt a Sugar Glider

"Hi, this is Elizabeth Cantu and I am speaking on behalf of Expert Village. This is about the age at which to get a sugar glider. This is often brought up to me as to whether or not they should get a baby or whether or not to get an adult. If you are going to get a baby, it should be a minimum of 12 to 16 weeks old before you get one otherwise they are not weaned from their parents and they do not get the social skills that they need to survive. I have seen people sell them younger and it is generally considered a fairly irresponsible thing to do. As far as getting an adult glider, most of the time it will save you a lot of hassle. They are less expensive, there are plenty of them looking for homes and most people who adopt them get tired of them after a year or two or once they find out how much work they are to have. Also most of the bonding that is to be done with the babies have already been accomplished with the adults. They already like people, they are already friendly, where the babies can take some time to settle down. When you get a baby, you are still getting something new even though it has been handled by people . If you get it from a responsible breeder or pet store, they are still scared, they're nippy and they are basically little terrified wild animals and it takes them a long time to warm up to human beings, two to three months. So sometimes going with an adult glider for the first choice is actually better than going with a baby."
