"Hi, I'm Johan Svahnström on behalf of expertvillage. What type of enclosure should you pick for your gecko? Well, bigger isn't always better, especially in the beginning, and if you buy a baby. Try to get something small in the beginning so that your baby gecko doesn't feel too overwhelmed with its environment. I like these plastic shoe boxes myself that you just cut some holes in for breathing. Just keep some kind of a cover in there so they can hide underneath, and a little water bowl. That's all they need in the beginning. If you keep a single leopard gecko in a ten-gallon tank that you can pick up anywhere is fine when they get a little bit bigger. If you're going to keep two or more geckos, I would say a twenty-gallon long tank, or larger, is good. Now, it's not important at all to have a tall tank because geckos tend to stay on the ground all the time. More floor surface is more important. So, if you buy a regular aquarium tank, they tend to be kind of high, so try to find a tank for a reptile; either custom made for a reptile, or you can go to the pet stores and they'll have something for you. Once you've picked out the tank that you want for your gecko, it's important to find a good lid or a good cover. Don't use a glass cover. It gets way too moist and humid inside the cage. It needs to be a screen top that provides good ventilation, and is also sturdy enough to keep out cats and other things, and keep the lizards inside. One of these commercial screening closures that you can get that fits your tank is perfect. If you have a custom made tank, you have to make a custom made screen, as well. A little more tricky. So, that's why it might be better to buy one at a pet store."
