"On behalf of Expert Village I'm Nicole and I'm here to tell you about ball pythons. Ball pythons are called ball pythons because of the tendency to curl up into a small ball when they are afraid. They are also called royal pythons; it depends on where you are from and in Africa, they are called royal pythons and that is because they use to royalty use to own them. Ball pythons, this one is about 4 weeks old they can get up to well females can get up to 8 feet in length, usually stay around 6. The males can get up to 6 feet in length, they stay pretty thick. They are thick snakes and they are the smaller of the large snakes. The under belly of a ball python is always white unless it's a mortal they hall have the black the coloring with the gold spots sometimes they have a stripe that runs all the way down the back and sometimes they will just have spots like this one. These little pits right here on along the outside of the ball pythons are heat pits, they can sense heat from up to a mile away. This is how they find their prey, this is how they see in the dark they actually sense the heat they don't really see in the night time."

on 8/2/2008 I'm being very patient, here. Ball pythons get a maximum of 6 feet long, for very large females. Most are around 4 to 5 feet, with males being smaller than females. There has never been an 8 foot ball python.
The 'heat pits' are called labial pits, and the idea that they can sense heat a mile away is ludicrous. They can sense heat a few feet away. Ball pythons rely primarily on their sense of smell to detect prey.
