"On behalf of Expert Village, my name is Laura and I am here to talk to you about budgies. If you are considering breeding your budgies, one thing you need to be aware of is to make sure that the birds are compatible. Not every male and female are going to like each other. Once you get a male and female that are compatible with each other youput them in the same cage and let them court. The malewill court the female by sitting a branch and singing to her. After about a week of this you will notice the female will start to get larger. It usually takes 7-10 days for the eggs to appear. Once the female has layed the eggs, she will do the nesting. The maile will jump in occassionally and take control but the femaile budgie does all of the nesting. The eggs usually take between 17 to 24 days to incubate. During this period you may notice that the female doesn't come out, doesn't sing, doesn't talk, she is to busy taking care of her babies. Once her eggs are hatched both male and female will take care of the nestlings. One thing you need to be aware of when breeding is egg binding. This occurs when a porely formed egg or a broken egg gets lodged in the females ova duct. If this happens, you will notice that your budgie is hiding in a corner, not being very active, and you will notice that her ova duct looks swollen. If you think that a binding has occurred in your budgie you need to take her to a vet immediately and have the vet treat her otherwise she will die. The vet can give her a shot of hormones and calcium that will help disolve the eggs or he may have to do minor surgery to help remove the eggs."
