"Hi! I’m Sarah and I’m here at Extra Care Animal Hospital today, and I’m going to tell you a little bit about owning a lovebird. As far as taming your new lovebird goes, as with any other birds you should work very slowly. Birds are very intelligent creatures and just like with any more intelligent creatures it does take more time to earn their trust. These guys aren’t like dogs or cats where you can just throw a little bit of food at them and gain their trust faster. Birds do tend to be very slow to trust people, so it’s important that when you get your bird that you doing push too hard, otherwise you can scare the bird, traumatize the bird and that will make the bird take longer to trust you. It’s also important to understand that lovebirds do tend to be one of the most species of birds that will sometimes be more cage aggressive. That is they will be more protective of their cage, so they don’t like people coming up and poking their fingers in there and sometimes will be a little hesitant to come out of their cage. It is important to not open the cage and just let the bird coming walking out. The bird always needs to come out on your terms. That is you need to open the cage door, either place your hand in and pick the bird up or have the bird come to the cage door, pick the bird up and take it out."
