" Hi! I’m Sarah and I’m here at Extra Care Hospital today, and on behalf of expertvllage.com I’m going to tell you a little bit about owning a lovebird. As far as feeding your lovebird goes, the majority of your lovebird’s diet should be a high quality pellet diet. Your lovebird should not eat just seeds. Seeds are not a complete diet for birds. 10-15 years ago, when people originally really started keeping birds heavily as pets, birds were observed eating seeds in the wild so we thought that was the way to go. Unfortunately, through nutritional research in birds over the past 10-15 years, the veterinary community has found that seeds are not a good diet for birds and that many health problems that we see in birds are associated with an all seed diet. We see obesity, high cholesterol, amino suppression, which can lead to a number of bacterial fungal infections. Just a huge number of problems that can be caused by your bird being on an all seed diet. You want to feed your bird approximately 80-90 % of a pellet a diet. A pellet a diet is kind of like cat and dog food for cat and dogs. It’s 100% nutritionally complete in a little pellet formulated especially for your bird. In addition to the pellet a diet, you should be giving your bird fresh fruits and vegetables. You can also try different meats and cheeses, lean healthy meats, beans, and then you can try pasta in small amounts. Anything that’s going to be healthy for you is going to be healthy for your bird. You just want to stay away from chocolate, alcohol, or avocado; all of these can be toxic to your bird. Then you want to stay away from anything that’s not healthy for you such as fried food, anything to sugary, or anything like that. So just remember what’s healthy for you is healthy for your bird. "
