Hi! I’m Sarah and I’m here at Extra Care Animal Hospital today, and I’m going to tell you a little bit about owning a lovebird. As far as the food and water bowls go, you want to make sure that they’re easy to get out and easy to clean. You should be cleaning them everyday with hot soapy water. If you have the kind of ceramic bowls that lock to the side, you can get several different ones and just throw those in the dishwasher everyday, or you can have the little bowls like these that fit in the little doors. Just make sure you wash them with hot soapy water everyday like I mentioned. Sometimes some birds will learn how to flip their little doors up and get out, so you can maybe want to get small clips to ensure that that doesn’t happen. This particular bird does not try to do that, but I do know quite a few birds that are able to flip their little doors and up and sneak out when the owners aren’t looking. Like I mentioned, just get little clips on there and make sure it’s secure. One other feature of this cage, as you can see, that the spacing of the bars are close together, enough so that this bird can not get it’s head through the bars. Some of the larger cages may have spaces that are big enough that the bird can get it’s head through. You want to make sure that you get the cage that has bars that appropriately spaced for the size of your lovebird. One thing that you do not see on this cage that you may see at the pet store or that someone might try and sell you, are those little bird protectors. They are supposed to protect your bird from mites. They can be either dangerous or ineffective; therefore, we do not recommend them. Once again, the little bird protectors that you see are usually hung on the side of the cage to protect your bird from mites are unnecessary and can be dangerous to the health of your bird. We do not recommend them.
