" Hi! I’m Sarah and I’m here at Extra Care Animal Hospital today, and on behalf of expertvillage.com I’m going to tell you a little bit about owning a lovebird. It is very important that you cleaning the bedding in the bottom of the cage because you have to keep in mind that your bird is throwing food, splashing water down there, and it’s defecating down there. That’s breeding ground for bacteria. If you’re not changing it everyday, you can possibly see your bird get ill. Something else that you want in your cage is a grate over the bedding. An appropriate beddings for your birds cage would be newspaper, paper towels, or in this case, this owner like to use care fresh, which is a recycled paper bedding. There are several different brands of recycle paper bedding on the market available. Generally, in a bird’s cage you also want to grate on the bottom so that your bird cannot get down into the actual bedding itself. This cage, this owner uses just for travel, and the grate was damaged so they don’t have it anymore. For this bird’s permanent cage she does have a grate down here, so she can’t get down and root around in the bedding. Once again, keep in mind that there is fecal material, food, and water down there. Even if you are changing it everyday, you don’t want your bird down there rooting in that. As far as cleaning the cage goes, like I mentioned, you want to do that once a week. You want to use hot soapy water or you can use a dilute bleach solution. You can use one part bleach to 30 parts of water. Whatever you do you want to rinse very well and let it dry thoroughly before you putting your bird back in the cage. "
