"In this clip we'll show you how to trim the bird's nails. First you can examine the nails and see the tip on the nail which when you hold him is very pointy and will puncture your finger. So you want to cut off the tip of the nail, you don't want to go back too far because of the blood supply so basically I'm just taking off the very end of the nail to make it a little shorter so he can hold his perch and so that it's not sharp when we want to hold him. He is a bird that likes to be out of his cage and be with his family and if his nails are too long, it is not a pleasure to hold him. So we trim each one and then we file with a dremmel. As you can see, he curls his foot into a ball which can make it difficult to get to each nail so you have to get underneath and pry his foot open. Again something he is not fond of but it does need to be done to make sure that he stays in good condition. If his nails get too long, they can also damage his own foot."
