"Hi I’m Dr. Adrienne Mulligan on behalf of Expert Village.com and today we are going to talk about things in your cat’s environment. Things to put there to play with, but they serve bigger purposes than play. One thing you always want to have in your cat’s environment is something for them to sharpen their claws on. Now granted, it’s not fun to have a cat with sharp claws but they really need to do that to shed the outer part of their claw. So it’s really important for the health of their claws and toes to scratch on a scratching post. Different cats like different feeling textures so they come in lots of textures. This one happens to be sisal rope and it’s kind of rough and my cats all really like that and then others come in carpeted versions and this is a carpeted version of the same sort of thing. Then they will often use their cat’s little sleeping and hidey hole play houses to scratch on the side of that. Plus cat trees, all these things they’ll scratch. Sometimes they like to scratch horizontal and sometimes vertical. This plays a role in a couple of different ways but scratching posts and scratching items are extremely important in your cat’s house. "
