" Hi this is Elise McMahon for Expert Village.com and in this video series we are talking about taking your dog for a walk. If you would like to find out more about my services, you can visit my website at www.canineheadstart.com. So in this video clip, we are going to be demonstrating how to break your dog’s habit of pulling on leash. With this dog, come here Ursa. I’m using just a regular leash system. I’m not using a head halter or a body halter. You can see it’s just a leash with a collar attached to it and it comes up off the dog’s neck. So what I am going to do is I am going to walk with her and every time she pulls forward I am going to just simply stop. When she gives her attention back to me, I am going to reward her verbally, give her a praise, might give her a cookie some time and then we’ll continue the walk. The idea is that I want to reinforce her walking with me so I am going to demonstrate this for you now. Let’s go. Let’s go. Yes, good girl. Let’s go. So you could say the technique is when the dog does pull forward, we simply stop. We don’t continue walking forward with the dog. When the dog brings the attention back to us, you can reward them verbally with a toy, a cookie as I did in the case of Ursa, and then you can continue your walk. You are getting a message across the dog but if the dog is pulling all forward movement stops. "
