Hi, my name is Tracey Tenner and this is Doc. I’m the resident dog trainer and behaviorist here at Extra Care Hospital in Davy, Florida. We are here to talk to you today about how to house train your puppy. One of the questions I am often asked is what do I do if my puppy has an accident or makes a mistake in the house. The first thing to take into consideration is when did you puppy have the accident. If you come into a room and you find a pile or you find a puddle, there is absolutely nothing you can do except say shame on me. I should have been watching my puppy better. Remember puppies live in the moment. They don’t remember what they did two minutes ago. Never mind, five days ago. So if you don’t catch your puppy in the act of making the mistake, there is absolutely nothing you can do that will make sense. Remember you can only correct your puppy if you catch him or her in the act of making the mistake. If it is anytime afterwards, it is way too late and all you do then is interfere with the relationship you established with your puppy.
