" Hi! I’m Tracy Tenner with Better Behavior Dog Training here at Extra Care Animal Hospital in Davie, Florida. We’re here on behalf of expertvillage.com and we’re going to be teaching you how to teach your dogs tricks. This is Ed and we’re going to attempt to teach him to speak. The way to get a dog to speak is to have something in your hand that he really, really wants and in incense we’re going to tease him so that we can get him to what he wants. In Ed’s case I’m going to use a little hand signal that looks like this…and I’m going to say Ed, speak, speak, speak, good boy and as soon as he barks he gets a little tiny treat. So we’ll try that again, speak, speak, good, little tiny treat Ed happens to bark from a laying down position which is quite unusual. Speak, good boy, very, very good! We can also do some different commands like sit, good sit, down, good down while we’re practicing the others again. on 8/18/2008 Dear Tracy, I have a one year old mixed breed . The vet says he is Doberman and Rottwieler. On the RARE Occasion that he does bark, I mean realy bark! He sounds like a hound dog. He is a good dog (Beautiful)Great with the kids. Ive had him since he was about 8 wks old. My problem is that he just doesnt bark.. Here Ive got this great big dog and he is definatly a lover not a fighter. He loves everyone much to my disappointment. I heard him bark viscously once when we were camping and the Police suddenly came into our camp. (Just making the rounds I guess) Should I be worried that he wont protect us? He doesnt even hardly get up from his bed to greet us when he has been left home alone.We have to encourage him to get excited when we come home.
I have tried to teach him to "Speak" but all he does is stand there and look at me DROOLING for the treat. I find this very frustrating. I dont know how to get him to bark at all. The only time he utters a sound on his own is when another dog comes around or he sees a cat and that is more of a whinning sound rather than a bark. Or when I have walked to the nieghbors and left him chained up.(I find this Extremely Annoying)
Please help me, I dont want to be disappionted with my dog.I do love him and he is smart in all other areas of obediance. He was fairly easy to train. Thank You

on 11/11/2008 i tryed to get my dog to speak it not work he just lied down i had a treat and stuff but my keeshond did not speak but i told him he did a good job
