"I’m Tracy Tenner with Better Behavior Dog Training at Extra Care Animal Hospital in Davie, Florida. I am here today on behalf of Expert Village.com at the Tri County Humane Society in Boca Raton, Florida, where I have volunteered as a trainer and a behaviorist. We are here today to help you learn how to pick the perfect pet for you and your family. So if you are ready, let’s get started. As you make your first foyer into the animal shelter to adopt a pet, and you choose the initial animals that you think might be interested in, it may be important to find out long that pet has been at the shelter. Some dogs have been in shelters for a very long time or little bit what we call shell shocked. They are not really used to living in homes. They are not necessarily used to going into a situation where they know how to behave themselves, or for that matter, what good behavior is. That is not to say that a dog has been in a shelter for a very long time might not be the best pet in the entire world. I personally believe that dogs are grateful. They appreciate being adopted. They appreciate being invited into your wonderful home, but some of the questions to ask are these. How long has the dog been here at the shelter? Was it at another shelter before? Was it picked up as a stray? Was it surrendered by an owner? Another important question to ask, has the dog been adopted and returned to the shelter, and if so, why? What was the problem that the previous owner encountered? Has the dog bit? Was the dog not good with children? All these things are important to know when adopting your pet from the shelter.
