Adopt a Dog with the Hair Coat you Prefer

"I’m Tracy Tenner with Better Behavior Dog Training at Extra Care Animal Hospital in Davie, Florida. I am here today on behalf of Expert Village.com at the Tri County Humane Society in Boca Raton, Florida, where I have volunteered as a trainer and a behaviorist. We are here today to help you learn how to pick the perfect pet for you and your family. So if you are ready, let’s get started. One of the important things to consider while at the shelter is the specifics of the breeding type of dog you look at. Whether it is a purebred dog you are looking at or a mixed breed dog, there is one thing you are definitely going to have to deal with, and that is what we call hair coat. There are many dogs out there with different coats. Some have long curly hair. Some dogs shed a lot. Some of the things to consider are your finances and your time frame. If you get a dog that is going to have a lot of coat, do you have the time to sit there and brush it and groom it and comb it every single day? There is nothing worse than owning a dog with a matted coat. It is not fair to you and it certainly is not fair to the dog because it is uncomfortable. Another thing to consider when looking at dogs' coats is whether or not the dog needs to go to a professional groomer. There are many breeds out there that need to be groomed and clipped professionally and that costs money. Generally speaking, those breeds will have to go to a groomer roughly every six to eight weeks. It will require time on your part to either take them or bring the groomer to you. Certainly you will have to select the proper groomer, and you will have to be able and willing to pay for that grooming. Bathing? Does your dog have the type of coat that is going to need to be bathed all the time? If not, will it be odorous in your house? All things to consider when adopting a dog. Remember to look at the hair because that is something you are going to deal with forever. Shedding is another issue as well. If people in your home have allergies, you may want to consider how much or how little your dog may shed. It’s going to be an important part of bringing a new dog into your home. Do you want to vacuum everyday? Do you want little dust bunnies in every corner? These are all things to look at when adopting a dog and narrowing down your choices.
