How to Teach Your Husky to Sit

" Hi! I’m Melanie McLeroy with Taurus Training for Expert Village, and today we’re going to talk about training dogs. Gloria the husky is going to help us out by showing you how to teach a husky to sit. Now remember Gloria is an older dog. She’s had some training and she knows me, however she’s also getting a little nervous about her environment. There are lots of cars driving by, people walking around, so I’m going to try to use food as a lure to show you how to teach your husky how to sit. Now if food doesn’t work for your husky, then try a different motivator. Gloria, good, very interesting over there, hi Pumpkin, so she’s very distracted. Let’s try the food and see if that will get her attention—slightly interested… and she’s not interested. So let’s go to plan B. A different training technique might work for Gloria. What I need to do is get her attention, and what I’m going to try is using my body to show her what I wanted her to do. Then I’ll give the command as her bottom is going down, and then mark it as soon as it does. Now since the food in my pocket isn't a reward, I might try a squeaky toy, let's just try some attention and affection and see if that works for Gloria, the husky. So see how she’s moving away and I’m going to move into her sit, good, so I’m simply moving into her to encourage how to sit, okay. Sit, good, okay, sit, good, very nice, good girl Gloria, okay, sit, good, see how responsive Gloria is being to me. This is an example of how I can use our relationship to make my attention and my affection contextually valuable, and that actually becomes a reward in itself.
