" Hi! I’m Melanie McLeroy with Taurus Training for Expert Village, and today we’re going to talk about training dogs. So we’re going to work on teaching this standard poodle how to come. Now Aida has been a bit of challenge today because of all the distractions, but that’s fine. We keep in mind that you want to start slowly with your dogs. Standard poodles in particular tend to be pretty hyped up when they’re puppies. However, when they’re young, they want to hang around you, they want to come to you, so every time your puppy or your young dog comes to you, praise them, lots of positive reinforcement. Now, most people use the word “come”; at Taurus training we don’t, we use a different word. We use “here,” because most dogs have learned that “come” means to run away faster. You want to set your dog up to succeed. If they take off of the screen door and run down the street, don’t keep yelling come. Then, if they finally do come to you, even if you’re very frustrated that they ran away, don’t punish them for coming, then they think the punishment is for coming to you not for running away in the first place. So we’ll work with Aida a little bit. First we need to get her attention. Oop… there’s a fly. Aida, good, good. Now, I had to use a little bit of hand signal there to get her eyes up to mine. Now since she’s so distracted, good, I’m going definitely reward that check in, that was wonderful under the circumstances. I’m simply going to get a little bit away, make a lot of noise, ask her to come here and then move backward very quickly to encourage her to come. …here, good girl, excellent. Good girl, heel, all right. Let’s do that again, let’s try with a sit, good, here, good. Now there I wanted to say the word right away as I started moving away, because I’m having such a hard time keeping her attention. She’s pin up, here, good girl, okay. Now, with a recall it’s a little bit harder to know exactly when to mark. I’d like to do it in the middle of the recall. Some trainers like to do it at the beginning. Here, good, good girl, good girl. So we’re going to move on to teach Aida how to walk nicely on a leash. "
