" Hi! I’m Melanie McLeroy with Taurus Training for Expert Village. It’s time to work with a Wheaten Terrier. This Wheaten Terrier is going to learn how to stay. Maddy, good, down, good. Now we’re going to start with the down stay here and keep in mind that Maddy is extremely mellow she’s an older Wheaten Terrier and she has had some training that her owners have obviously kept up with, which is wonderful. So if your dog isn’t doing this well, be patient there are plenty of other videos with other training techniques on Expert Village for you to check out. Maddy is on her, down, on her haunches again, so I want to get her over. Good, now to teach her to stay, good, I’m going to gradually introduce distractions. I’ll reward her as long as she’s staying. And then the intervals will become longer and longer as she improves. So I’m simply going to walk around a bit here, make some noise… ump, down, good. Now she broke so I went ump, that’s my no reward marker that means you didn’t do quite the right thing, however she’s doing well now, Maddy… ump, down, good. So I’ll reward her and then I’ll try that again, moving around a little bit and that it looks like it was the whistle that got her up last time. So what I’ll do is whistle a little bit lower and not as long. Good. Yippee….ump, down, good. Again the yippee is what got her up. So let’s move a little more slowly. Instead of combining the yippee with my arms going up I’ll try one of the other. Yippee, ump, that’s too much, so let’s try just yip, good…ump, yip, good, yippee, little bit quieter, yippee, ump, down, good. Now Maddy is continuing to stay on her haunches, technically I should be correcting that every single time, but we’re running out of time on this video. But I think that you can see how to teach a dog how to stay. It takes some patience. Be sure to start in an environment with few distractions and build up slowly, because you want to set your Wheaten Terrier up to succeed with the stay. "
