" Hi! I’m Melanie McLeroy with Taurus Training for Expert Village. It’s time to work with a Wheaten Terrier. Maddy, our Wheaten Terrier did an amazing job with the sit. Now it’s time to start working on lying down. Since I was getting so much response I’m going to do what we were doing before and use some body language to encourage her to do the command. Again if your Wheaten Terrier is not this responsive, it’s not about you, she is older, she’s obviously had some training. She’s doing a great job, so if these things don’t work for you, check out an another video. Sit, good, very nice, I’m simply going to bend over and see what kind of response I get. Maddy, good, down, good, very nice. Now notice I didn’t reward, I want to randomly reward, not every single time. Okay, sit, down. Good, excellent. Now there is one thing I’d to like work on with Ms. Maddy the Wheaten Terrier and that is see how she’s on her haunches, it’s very, good. She is a psychic Wheaten Terrier. When dogs are on their haunches like that it’s very easy for them to pop up from the down stay. So we really like them to be over on one hip. Let me show you how to do that with the treat. Maddy, sit, good, down, just move their head to the side, good and they’ll go over on one hip, okay. Let’s see if she responds just to a hand signal, down, oh! not quite, so we’ll go back to using the food to get her over on one haunch, good. So you can use the food to get her down quickly and over on one hip quickly and then you gradually start fading that lure, you make the treatment reinforcement random then you fade the lure. There is a video on fading the lure that’s very, very helpful, you can check that one out too. So this Wheaten Terrier is doing an excellent job learning how to lie down, we’re going to work about the recall next."
