Series Summary

Man has long had a unique relationship with the animals on this planet. We’ve kept them as beasts of burden, to carry loads and draw carriages. We’ve also trained them to herd or hunt other animals. Yet, perhaps as a gentler development from this history, we have begun to bring animals into our homes, to domesticate and care for them, and to call them friends.

Over time, dogs have proven to be well-adapted for human life, expressing qualities of loyalty and bravery, and responding to commands. Since dogs are inherently wild animals, they all need some sort of obedience training to become accustomed to their surroundings and the rules of your home. The most difficult part of this process is communicating with your dog in a civil, non-violent manner, asserting authority without aggression. By praising positive behavior and correcting or ignoring negative behavior, you are able to show your pet what is acceptable without using fear. This helps create a loving relationship between you and your dog.

In this free Wheaten Terrier obedience training video series, a expert dog trainer will show you many tips, techniques, and tricks to use to teach your dog to take commands. Lessons include how to train your dog to sit, teach your dog to stay, recognize his name, come when you call, lie down, and heel.

" Hi! I’m Melanie McLeroy with Taurus Training for Expert Village. It’s time to work with a Wheaten Terrier. This is Maddy. She’s our Wheaten Terrier. Today Maddy needs to learn how to pay attention. We’re going to teach her to respond to her name. It’s very important that every dog learns to respond to their name, learn to take their cues about their properness of their behavior from you. If you haven’t already please check out the video on relationship building and the pre-training videos, before you start working with your Wheaten Terrier. So what I’m going to do is teach Maddy the name game. I’m going to say her name in a special way and when she makes eye contact I’ll reward that. If you haven’t please again check out the video on marking and rewards before you proceed. So I’ll say her name, she’ll make eye contact, I’ll mark that and then I randomly reinforce. Maddy, good. Now sometimes with Wheatens, it’s hard to tell if they’re looking at you because they have hair in their eyes. Sometimes you can even get a little ponytail holder for the little topknot. Maddy, good, very nice, very nice. Maddy, good. Now Maddy is being extremely responsive. So I’m going to start making her rewards random. Maddy, good. I’ll now wait until she’s distracted. Maddy, good. Also going to start giving her treats from different hands. Maddy, good. Now you notice that time that it took her a little while to look at me. Remember to be patient and don’t keep saying the word of the command or name over and over again. Say it once, if she doesn’t respond, she’s terribly distracted simply walk away and try again later. You can also try using a kissy noise or clapping your hands to help her out, good girl. So we’re going to move on and work on the sit with this Wheaten Terrier."
