"Hi! I’m Melanie McLeroy with Taurus Training for Expert Village and it’s the time to talk about Beagles. We moving on to teach Bailey the beagle how to sit. Bailey is very interested in the crumbs on the floor, so I’m going to get his attention first by playing the name game. Bailey, good, okay, excellent. Now Bailey went ahead and offered me a sit and let me remark that my giving him the treat there when he was jumping up was not good timing. So, do as I say, not as I do. I am going to show Bailey, this treat and lure his head up and his bottom down into a sit unless he psychic and he does it on his own. Good boy, oh! Again, that was bad timing. Bailey obviously is offering me behaviors. So, I’m going to use that as an opportunity to use serendipity in my dog training. Okay, I let him offer it, sit, good. So, I can actually, good boy, with this beagle, use him offering behaviors and marking them to show me exactly what I want him to do. If your dog is not doing this then check out one of the other breed videos because not all dogs do this. Okay, sit, good. Now I’m going to be very careful, okay, about when I reward this. Now I was talking there, so I didn’t even get a chance to say to sit, so let him get up, sit, good. If you have a dog that offers behaviors all you have to do is mark the behavior, say it right before they do it, mark the behavior when it happens and then start rewarding. Then you can reward the behavior randomly and you got a dog that goes to verbal commands, very, very quickly. Again, this doesn’t always happen, sit, good, so check out one of the other videos if you need to. Now, there I was very careful to try to keep him from jumping, that’s the one thing I need to work on here, sit, good. So I’m going to come in lower with the treat, good boy. Now, this is beautiful how Bailey is offering commands but see if he’ll do with the down command as well. "
