Series Summary

“Dogs are not people. Remember, dogs are not people. Your dog is not your child. A dog is not a person. Remember, your dog is not a person!” No matter how many times the dog trainers, animal behaviorists, and veterinarians tell us this, we still treat our dogs as though they were children or human friends. What is so wrong with this? It is interesting to watch a professional animal behaviorist or “dog whisperer” work with families who have troublesome pets. Invariably the family needs as much training as the pet. Dogs are predictable. Although wild animals at heart, a dog has a formulaic mind that responds to its environment in predictable ways. Training a dog or acting as its “pack leader” is not cruel or unnatural. Canine society requires a pack leader, and your dog requires a strong leader to live a healthy life. You can have a friend and a companion in your dog, but you are selling it short if you do not supply the proper discipline. Without discipline and regular exercise (walking or roaming is evolutionarily programmed into a dog) your dog will be imbalanced and unhappy. Trust the experts.

In this free video series, learn how to properly train your dog. Our expert, Ryan Gwilliam, shows you several handy tricks to make your dog training successful and rewarding. Learn the right way to walk your dog. Also, learn how to potty train your dog. If you are worried about your dog wandering, learn how to keep him/her in the yard without a fence or leash. Sometimes, dogs can get excitable. Learn how to control an excited dog, and learn how to keep them from biting and barking. Ryan also shows you some handy tips for making sure your care properly for your dog. So, if you love your best friend, learn the right way to train a dog today!

Video Transcript

"This is Ryan Gwilliam on behalf of Expert Village. I am going to teach you how to properly walk a dog. What you want to do first is get your leash and make sure that your dog is in a calm state. He needs to be sitting down and relaxed as these dogs are right here. If your dog is excited, barking, jumping or wagging his tail too much then when you get outside, he is not going to listen to you. So make sure that he is calm like this and we put the leash on him and then we will go over to the front door and anything that creates excitement we will redo. The important thing to know is that you are always the first one out of the door. Your dog should never lead you. You should always lead your dog. You open your door a lot of times your dog will get excited and go running outside. I have trained my dog not to do that and so they will stand here patiently until I decide to move forward on my command. So then we will walk forward. Now as far as when you are on the street, your dog should never be allowed to sniff the ground, run ahead of you and anything like that. A dog is always at your side or slightly behind you and then you will make sure they are not looking left to right. They will look straight ahead at all times and that makes them concentrate and they are fully concentrating and waiting for your commands. "
