Checking for Worms & Deworming Your Dog

" Hi my name is Sarah and my name is Haley and we are two of the technicians here at Extra Care Animal Hospital and on behalf of Expert Village.com we are going to speak with you today a little bit about the care of your dog. I’m going to talk a little bit about intestinal parasites. The most common intestinal parasites that we see are hook worms, round worms, whip worms and coccidia. We generally only see coccidia in puppies although it can be seen some times in adult dogs. Hook worms, round worms and whip worms we can see in dogs of any age. It is important to check the stool sample annually on your dog. This can be done when the vaccines are done. You can either bring a stool sample with you to the vet or the vet can obtain a stool sample while you are there. Common signs of intestinal parasites include vomiting and diarrhea. You can see bloody stool. Some times in the case of tape worms which are transmitted by sneeze, you will see little white what looks like grains of rice in the stool and those are tape worms segments. If you see these signs you should contact your veterinarian to have a stool sample checked and have your dog examined. There are a number of different de-wormers on the market. These are all different medications that can be used to treat a variety of intestinal parasites. These can be in pill, liquid or injectable form and will be used by your veterinarian as they see fit to treat your dog’s intestinal parasites.
