" Hi my name is Sarah and my name is Haley and we are two of the technicians here at Extra Care Animal Hospital and on behalf of Expert Village.com we are going to speak with you today a little bit about the care of your dog. We are going to talk a little bit about micro-chipping. Micro-chipping is very important for the safety of your dog. You want to make sure that your dog does not come micro-chipped from the breeder or pet store that you have your pet micro chipped at a veterinarian’s office. There are several different brands of microchips available and they all get registered to the companies national registry so if you are visiting somewhere, out of town or something like that and your dog gets lost, no matter where you are your dog can be located through the micro chip company and your dog can be returned to you. Depending on what area of the country you are in, it is sometimes a good idea to register your secondary contact address as somewhere out of the area in case of a disaster such as a hurricane, tornado, earth quake or something like that so that in the event of an unfortunate circumstance like that a family or friend out of the area can be contacted in the event that you are not reachable due to a disaster. As far as the specifics of the microchips go, they are generally implanted up here in the shoulder blade area. They sometimes can migrate down as low as down here. Some times you can find them back here so if you feel under your dog’s skin what is feels like a little piece of rice that is the microchip people. The microchip is injected using a needle. It is kind of like a regular, almost like getting a vaccine and the microchip is implanted under the skin and contains the permanent information that in the event that your dog is lost will be picked up by a microchip scanner. Almost animal hospitals and all animal shelters have a microchip scanner so in the event that your dog is lost and if it comes into an animal hospital or shelter, it will be scanned for a microchip. The microchip company will be called and you will be contacted and they will let you know where your dog is. Microchips are the only legally recognized form of identification in the event that your dog is stolen or lost. The microchip will provide you legal protection to get your dog back. That is if someone finds your dog and decides they want to keep it, the microchip will provide positive identification if it does go to a court of law. I have actually seen cases where a dog was stolen and was returned to the owner by the authorities when we scanned the microchip and found that the microchip number was registered to the owner.
