How to Teach Your Golden Retriever to Stay

" Hi! I’m Melanie McLeroy with Taurus Training for Expert Village. Today we’re going to talk about training golden retrievers. Mr. Bodie, the golden retriever here is a great example of a dog who knows commands, but he needs some work on the stay. As we saw in the last training video on lying down, he can lie down but he likes to pop right backup again. We call this the popcorn dog, and we want to try to diminish it in Mr. Bodie. What I’ll need to do is gradually increase the intervals between the time I mark him going down and he gets his reward, so that he learns to stay. Bodie, good…. Remember even if the dog has a command, you want to keep up with random reinforcement. So we’ll try getting him into it down, down, good…. Wait a little bit, then the reward. If he looks he’s about to get up, I’m going to reward him again to keep him down and set him up to succeed. Now he’s moved over onto one hip and he’s looking really relaxed. So that tells me it’s time to start working on some distractions, upping the ante a little bit. So I’m simply going to move around. Good… reward him randomly, good, very nice, very nice… good boy. Now it’s time to make things you will be exciting around here… good. He was a little bit distracted by train whistle there, actually helped him stay down …yippee, wohoo, excellent, no freebies, ump, down. So see how quickly I marked the fact that he did the wrong thing when he got up by saying the anh, and I immediately helped him get back down. So that’s how you teach your dog stay. "
