"We're teaching you how to not let your dog go in the street. In this case, Possum loves to fetch, but if we throw it in the street she's not allowed to go get it. This dog will never get hit by a car, knock on wood, because she's always been trained never to go in the street. Generally, how I would teach her is I would always have her on a leash. Every time you get out in the street with your dog on a leash, you come to curve like this. Come, come, whoa, sit. You might want to follow me out here. We walk forward and we make them sit. We stand right here. Just stand out on the street with your leash and we don't let them come with us. Now we say okay Possum, fetch. Come out of the street. Good girl. Always praise your dog if they do something good. Don't overly, Oh my gosh, it's done something so amazing. I'm going to give it treats all the time and my dog's is going to get fat and it's never really going to learn a thing. Don't give you dog a treat, give it love. If you had a child and every time it did something good and you gave it a mayonnaise sandwich, it's going to get fat and lazy and it's not really going to learn a thing. If you teach your dog well and you try to protect it in this manner, then they will never get hit by a car. So I can throw this toy out a thousand times, and these people roll their stop signs all the time, so it's not always your dogs fault if it get run over. In this case, we have, Possum, come, come. Possum, what are you doing, come here. Good girl, she's got her toy. Okay, sit down. Come. Sit. Out of the street. A good way to teach it out of the street is every time you get to the curve with your dog, you say out of the street. When you're out of the street, you say good boy or good girl, you sit them down and you pet them. You make sure they know they've done something good by getting out of the street, and so they'll learn that. They'll learn that being out of the street is a good thing and they live longer and they get to play fetch a lot longer. Possum, fetch. Good girl, come here. Again, this is my favorite trick that Possum knows. Won't go get it. She just won't do it."
