"Hi! I’m Melanie McLeroy with Taurus Training for Expert Village and today we’re going to talk about puppies. So let’s talk about how to teach your puppy to walk on a leash. The first thing to consider is the leash itself. For a small puppy a really heavy leash with a big heavy clip is not necessarily the way to go. Try to go for a light leash with a light clip. Now like anything else the puppy has to get used to it gradually. So my first recommendation is to take the leash and attach it to the puppy’s collar and just let him drag it around the room a little bit. You can feed him treats, he may reach around and grab at the leash with his mouth and that’s okay but don’t let him chew it up. The next step is to start walking around the room inside just holding the leash. Barto, come here little puppy. Here is our little puppy, just want to get him used to it, so he’s trying to grab at it or just pull it out of his mouth or trade the leash for a treat, Barto, good. So there I distracted him away from the leash and practiced a little bit of the name game too. So when you’re ready to start moving try not to ever let the leash get tight. You want to leave the leash loose and simply make turns constantly. Sometimes you can use food as a lure to actually get the dog to keep walking. Little puppy, little puppy see how loose the leash is, I’m just going to take a couple of steps, come on. Good boy. Couple of steps, good boy. Good puppy. Very nice. Now we’re in a room with very few distractions and that’s definitely the way the way to start whenever you’re teaching your puppy something new. Remember get him used to it gradually, create positive associations with everything new you try with your puppy, especially the leash and when you’re working on the leash don’t ever let it be tight. Now Barto and I are going to go outside where there are lot more distractions. So be sure to check out the other video the second part of teaching your puppy how to walk on the leash. "
